Why I can’t stand Little Kids
I saw a toddler having a complete and utter meltdown in the
grocery store. I thought to myself why can’t this mother, control her kid…where
is security when you need them.
The screaming toddler, sprawled out completely on the floor
insisted on the candy by the register. The mother held her ground.
I watched this go on for a few minutes and then…I realized
that it’s not that I don’t like kids—I am jealous of their emotional freedom.
They have not learned how to hide their true feelings about
life yet. If they eat something they don’t like they spit it out and say, “IT’S
Nasty!” If they don’t want to do
something, their favorite word is “NO!”
Toddlers don’t learn to say yes first. They learn to set boundaries.
They learn to say “yes” later when they are trying to please
everyone but themselves.
While watching this screaming toddler, I realized that the
reason that I thoroughly enjoy, garbage television reality shows is because the
people on those shows say and do things that I only fantasize about saying and
doing. You know… because I have children…I
have to keep my job…I don’t want to embarrass my family…
My favorite scene in the movie “Straight Outta Compton” was
when Ice Cube took a baseball bat and bashed the record producer’s office for cheating
him out of his money. That was a beautiful special moment.
Being a civilized, employed, not-in-prison-- adult—requires diplomacy,
discipline, and restraint—until your 70’s and 80s when you are retired.
Now I see why old people just tell you the God-awful truth,(that’s
been building inside of them since they were toddlers)--You look fat; You just
need to stop eating; how big you gone get? blah, blah…
So I guess, I am going to have to hold it together for another 25-years or
so—doing what needs to be done and saying what needs to be said..
I found myself admiring that screaming kid that I ultimately
fell in love with. I realized that one day that kid would be in a jail cell, a
cubicle, a classroom, or an office of some sort--home or corporate—wishing he
could have an utter meltdown without being judged, fired, or institutionalized.
I winked at him and
whispered underneath my breath—enjoy this precious, precious moment—and carry
on.
